In the lead-up to the general elections scheduled for 8 February in Pakistan, the country has witnessed a surge in violence and terrorist activities, casting a shadow over the electoral process. A recent major attack targeted the police station in Dera Ismail Khan city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, just days before the elections.

According to senior police officer Anisul Hasan, ten policemen lost their lives in the terrorist assault, with an additional six people sustaining critical injuries. The attackers, yet to be identified, initiated the incident with sniper shots, breaching the Chaudhavan police station. Subsequently, they engaged in indiscriminate firing and hurled hand grenades, claiming the lives of six elite police unit officers from Swabi who were deployed to support local law enforcement during the elections.

In response to the attack, heightened security measures have been implemented, with a comprehensive search operation underway on the roads leading to South Waziristan Tribal District and Dera Ghazi Khan. Vigilant monitoring of individuals entering and exiting the areas is a top priority for the administration, as the nation braces for potential security challenges surrounding the electoral proceedings.
